The Office for Health, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (O-HEID) at Kennedy Krieger Institute would like to share a sponsored Special Grand Rounds presentation, At the Intersection of Equity, Science, and Social Justice: An Inflection Point for Academic Medicine, by Dr. Joseph Wright, Chief Health Equity Officer of the 13-hospital University of Maryland Medical System and (adjunct) Professor of Health Policy and Management at University of Maryland School of Public Health. Dr. Wright is one of the nation’s original cohort of board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and has served as a leader for the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Academy of Medicine on issues related to trauma prevention and access to health care.

One article is the American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement with lead author, Dr. Maria Trent (our colleague at Johns Hopkins) that discusses the impact of racism on children and youth and offers solutions to this public health crisis. The second article, authored by Dr. Tiffani Johnson (Assistant Professor, University of California, Davis and pediatric leader in anti-racism and healthcare), is a more personal journey by an academic pediatrician that offers a window into the lived experiences and consequences of interpersonal, structural and institutional racism on the healthcare workforce and pediatric patients.
